This was the first meeting held under the title International Snow Science Workshop. The motto A Merging of Theory and Practice was first introduced at this meeting, crystallizing and formalizing the philosophy that had been evolving in earlier meetings.

Special invitations were sent to researchers and practitioners to encourage interchange of ideas. Topics included avalanche zoning, grooming cross-country ski trails, bomb trams and post control releases.

In addition, the first issues of the Avalanche Review were distributed.

The field trip was to Bridger Bowl Ski Area. Ed LaChapelle was the banquet speaker.
